Vent Shaft Cowls

There are 3 types of vent shaft cowling available: wire cowl (non-directional, also known as a bird cage); rotating cowl (also known as a whirly bird, used in educt cowls); and forced induct cowl (has a tail like appendage).

Both induct and educt cowls are fitted with stainless steel shafts and sealed stainless steel bearings to minimise damage from highly corrosive sewer gases and reduce the asset owner’s ongoing maintenance costs. They come in most popular colours.

Wire cowls

This is a non-directional passive cowling which requires minimal maintenance, also known as a “bird cage“. Ideal for use where access for ongoing maintenance is severely limited eg. resident’s backyards.

Rotating educt cowls

An active cowl designed to extract maximum amounts of corrosive gases from areas where septicity and odour issues are common eg. Pump Station wet wells and Rising Main discharge maintenance holes. Also known as a “whirly bird“. Rotating cowls create a vacuum to maximise extraction of corrosive and odorous gases from sewer lines and maintenance holes. UV stability to withstand elements.

  • Materials: Turbine & Flue-Aluminium grade 5005 H34
  • Bearings: Steel NSK BFW30 Bearing Deflector Flange-Aluminium grade
  • Rivets: Stainless steel STST grade 302
  • Screws & Nuts: 304 or 316 stainless steel
  • Shafts & Brackets: 303 or 304 stainless steel
  • Bearing Holder: Glass filled nylon
  • Finish: Powder coated inside & out with polyester powder.

Rotating induct cowls

This type of cowl has a tail like appendage. Designed to allow the cowl opening to always face the on-coming wind. The wind vane fitted to the rear of the cowl ensures the cowl spins to face wind direction, & wind is forced into the vent. These cowls draw oxygen into the sewer, increasing air-flow and thereby reducing septicity, corrosion and concrete cancer. UV stability to withstand elements.
