Why you need to monitor sewer vents

Sewer vent shafts play a crucial role in wastewater networks, by providing adequate ventilation. Many existing NSW council ventilation shafts are now in excess of 80 years old and present an urgent safety risk to people and property.

Older sewer vent shafts are generally constructed of reinforced concrete. When exposed to sewer gases, concrete ultimately degrades, exposing the reinforced steel bars, and making concrete vent shafts susceptible to lightning strikes or collapse.

“Odour and corrosion are almost always found together. Under typical sewer conditions, odorous gases chemically react to form acids, which cause corrosion of our valuable and critical pipes. If the problem persists, this leads to leaks and even complete collapse of the sewer system, with catastrophic consequences.” ~ Duncan Reynolds, SVSR R&D

SVSR provides full assessment and monitoring of your existing sewer network assets including vent shafts, vent cowls and odour filters. We make recommendations for public safety and long-term cost-effectiveness.

Our sewer vent shaft services

We fabricate our sewer vent shafts in high-grade stainless steel for durability and minimal ongoing maintenance. We can add rotating educt vent cowls, induct cowls or custom-designed cowls for added efficiency.

We specialise in:

  1. Removal, disposal and replacement of ageing and deteriorating sewer vent shafts for regional councils and water agencies
  2. Difficult vent shaft access e.g. residents’ backyards, work near roadways, overhead power lines and underground services
  3. Detailed design advice, odour/gas assessment and condition assessment of existing vent shafts, maintenance budget planning.

We design, fabricate and install sewer vent shafts, vent cowls and odour filters throughout NSW. We project manage every detail for a safe, on-time and successful sewer ventilation solutions.

Managing community relations

Since the majority of NSW sewer vent shafts are located on private property and in residents’ front and backyards, our first priority is to communicate with property owners.

We liaise with all interested stakeholders, including neighbours, local councils, government organisations, developers and private businesses.

Where the work has a high impact on the wider community, we assign a site-specific Contractor Community Liaison Plan.
