A unique rope-access sewer vent installation for a heritage property

With decades of experience across sewer vent design, fabrication, installation and removal for both regional councils and urban commercial projects, SVSR is skilled in sewer vent solutions for diverse properties and locations.

We recently demonstrated our problem-solving capabilities for Sydney company True Flow Infrastructure, who contracted us to fabricate and install a new vent shaft to be attached to the wall of a heritage-listed home… with a particular site challenge.

Here’s how SVSR completed a unique sewer vent installation whilst adhering to site restrictions and optimum safe-work methods.

About the project

True Flow Infrastructure is a small Sydney company specialising in infrastructure for Sydney Water projects. They contacted SVSR whilst laying pipework for a heritage-listed home – located next to a massive excavation site that is part of the NSW Government’s major West Connex roads scheme.

Chris Antoun, SVSR Operations & Compliance Manager, explains the project and key site challenge. “We were approached by David Marksour at True Flow Infrastructure to replace a sewer vent to be attached to the wall of a heritage-listed home next to the West Connex excavation. It was a very deep excavation site with tight access just half a metre wide.”

Given it was impossible to use a scissor lift or scaffolding due to the depth of the pit, we needed a unique and flexible project solution. “The only way to complete the job was with rope access,” says Chris.

Chris explains the project steps. “Our team fabricated and painted the sewer vent, then we prepared to install the vent via rope access. We secured a ladder to access the property roof, then our crew secured anchor points to the roof and wall to set up our life lines. Once that was ready, we started work, and completed the installation in six hours.”

For Chris, working at heights isn’t new. “I did do a lot of rope-access work in a previous role,” he says. “It’s been quite a while since I last needed to do this type of work. I don’t mind heights, but it can be quite fatiguing.”

For David from True Flow Infrastructure, it was a very successful project. “I initially contacted Robin Adams (General Manager) then dealt with Chris. They were both very good and they pretty much got the job done the next day. It was good quality work and we will be using SVSR again.”
